WTC 2019 Reports

So another WTC under the belt and a good reason to get a post up! This will be my battlereports (I did not plan on this so pictures are missing, prepare for a wall of text). This year I brought Curcible Guard for the WTC, feeling confident with them after some good results through the year and I also really enjoy playing them.

Syvestro was given as the main choice (he just has every tool available and is best at basically everything in crucible guard) and I decided to bring him jack heavy. A Vulcan on Prospero was the base for the list and then I built the rest around that. I ended up a bit short on units so the scenarios with multiple circle zones are sometimes rough but I find that the reslience of the lights and the attrition output in general is often enough to keep me in the game anyway.

As a second list I have gone through a few different choices. What i needed was mainly something to play into Retribution (aka Tridents) and that could maybe give me a chance into wurmwood in bones. In general hard shooting and Stranglehold+Blinding light are the enemies of my Syvestro list. I ended up choosing to go with Locke in PM hoping that she could slingshot heavies enough to take out Tridents while vanguards could keep things alive on the approach. I felt like this was an ok plan as long as their is some relevant terrain on the table. Cover and/or LoS blocking lets me stay alive long enough to deliver the Toros. Locke also ended up feeling solid into Grymkin, mainly the Clock heavy lists where the feat made sure it was hard for them to do much damage without charging up my tokens.

Game1 we went up against Canada Polar Bear.

Canada

Our “There is only one Infernals players out of 320, lets put our time on more common things” attitude got put to shame instantly and we assumed we were a game down from the start. They also got to choose tables in this game which is usually a very big advantage. The Scenario was King of the hill.

I got to play against the famous Charles Song and his Mercs, I dropped Syvestro (Into Ossrum I think I can play both lists but I struggle with clearing all the steelheads with Locke and Im much more comfortable with Syvestro so I Chose him) and he played Ossrum. I won the roll to go first which is really important in this matchup.

I end up with Syvestros BG central, Railless on my left and Vulcan on my right. He puts steelheds and Alexia on my right to use an obstruction to hide behind to keep contesters relevant and as a spot for Alexia to spawn solos, otherwise he deploys fairly evenly.
Turn 1 Super fuel, admo on Toro, transmutation on Vanguard, Explosivo on Vulcan. I run up full distance and threaten deep into Charles lines, Ossrums walks backwards turn 1 to avoid the Vulcan sprays and due to that ends up with a Driller outside of command leaving me pretty open to do what I want on my left flank without fear of retaliation.

Turn 2 My Vulcan with explosive kill a couple steelheads, I choose to not kill any without RFP to Deny souls to Alexia. Vulcan also took down a Bunny with the big gun. On the other side the railless tok down half a Bunny as well as I didn’t have to respect the driller on that side. I end my turn heavily contesting everything. Charles might have been able to clear my zone with a feat and Bulldoze spell but that would leave ossrum very exposed. His turn 2 he uses the spray bunnies to take out one trancer but misses the other one the he realized could be used to slam my hermit to cover all of the central zone (I would have used Mad visions here if he had hit I think). A couple steelheads go for my Liberator that is now in that zone and one go for the objective to very little effect. Here Charles makes a big mistake though, underestimating the explosivity of the scenario when he decides to keep back the majority of his army again. Leaving nothing but the objective in his zone, 5-6 halbs in my zone and the 2 bunnies and a Basher in the central zone.

Turn 3 I quickly consider what my odds are and figure it is much too good to pass up. I drop explosivo and Admonition upkeeping transmutation on my vanguard. I allocate full to the Toro and liberator and 1 to the vanguard. Hermit walks to the center of the zone catching a bunny in his aura. Syvestro walks into the central zone and feats and grenades the -2 arm bunny with a boosted damage he cranks in a good chunk of damage. He also arcs a free Stygian to kill the Steelhead furthest away. Alyce loads the Vanguard full and a mechanic gives pathfinder to the Toro (there was some difficult terrain/rubble in the zone). The middle trancer moves up and slams hermit forward getting the basher in the aura but not long enough for the second bunny, hermit also ends up on the flag. Prospero goes for guided fire. Vulcan goes for Rust and clips the bunny on the right in it and then kills all the halbs in the zone with both big gun shots to spare (on top of a fully loaded Liberator and a trancer…). The BE charges the objective and kills it with charge+left sprays. Small spray+right spray takes out the damaged bunny on that side, right spray and big gun put some damage into the basher. The Toro charges the Basher and kills it with focus to spare (could have been used for the bunny the BE killed if needed). The fully charged Vanguard now charges the remaining bunny that is in hermit Aura and rust, with Transmutation and feat… Assault shot takes it out. No more contesters anywhere. BE in left zone, Syv in the zone, hermit on the flag, Liberator in the right zone gives me 5 CP to Charles 0 and the game is over.

For my team we lose the infernals game as expected (turns out a pow 15 heavy onerounds a Blockader from 15” away..) and go 2-2 in the other ones so a 2-3 loss and we are out of the running immediately.

Game 2 we play in Ukrainian Boars.

2000px-Flag_of_Ukraine.svg

I get paired into a good matchup for me playing Syvestro into Skarre3 and I get to start again. We choose tables and the scenario is Bunkers. Due to a building in the central zone I went left with the Vulcan and right with the BE this time but still go full aggressive round 1.

Round 2 I start taking out the satyxis as Im not a fan of backlash onto Prospero and rfp 3-4 of them and a smokebelcher. My admonition Toro get squeezed a bit between the  Vulcan and the Building unfortunately (or so I think right now…). I try to make it hard for my opponent to contest my zone while I contest the flags pretty heavily. Vanguards with transmute in rubble stands on the left flag with only a couple satyxis in range, Vulcan Toro and hermit on the middle flag and BE out of any melee threat on the right.

He manages to get a Satyxis into my zone for contesting. He has a play to get Kharybdis onto my Toro with a Skarre place and escort, due to my placement he doesn’t consider admintion to much but turns out you don’t need much wiggleroom when Kharybis only has a few millimeters to spare on the charge so I admonition out and that leaves Kharybdis in the middle of the table accomplishing nothing. 1-0 for him

Round 3 I feat, I clear my zone and all flags, Toro kills Kharybdis and Vulcan keeps rfp-ing infantry as much as he can. My liberator tries to screen the BE on the right from ambush charges. Hermit contests his zone and I go to 4-1

His ambushers come in on the right. One of his heavies go into the Toro but is a bit short on killing it. The other heavy shoots my BE. Skarre goes over as much as she can to the right, feat up all spells and killing hermit and repos to get dash on the ambushers. Even with no freestrikes my liberator screen limits the numbers that get into the BE and he leaves it on a few boxes, cripples the Liberator a bit. This turn he doesn’t manage to contest my zone so we end up at 5-2.

Round 4. Since he is not contesting my zone I only need to clear one of the flags to go to 5 up. Only a heavy contests the middle flag in threat of 1-2 Trancers, Toro, Vanguard and Vulcan… Toro kills the heavy and a trancer runs into his zone for the contest and I end up at 7-2 for the win.

The team ends up at 4-1 this round.

Game 3, what is the worst that can happen in the 1-1 Bracket? Another Canada I guess! Canada Goose this time.

Canada

Pairing ends up with me in a fairly even matchup with Syvestro vs Child (Locke was meant as a Grymkin drop but mainly into clockspams and not really into Child since the plan is tank it out with tokens thanks to weaker attacks) piloted by Chris Orr. Scenario is Spread the net.

Chris makes a mistake choosing to go second, after my standard round 1 run that dawns on him as well and he doesn’t look too happy.

Not wanting to give me his heavies he offers up his Deathknell in range while keeping the rest behind. I decide that I can trade vanguard for Deathknell and figure I can do it without giving out tantrum by getting rust on the deathknell (that could be shieldguarded) by shooting a gremlin swarm and clip rust onto to DK. So rust is applied and 2 Vulcan sprays goes into the DK. Vanguard goes in and rolls incredibly bad (2 misses and 2 3-4 on the damage rolls). I really don’t want to give up a second jacks but my trancers get up to the challenge and with 2 trancer charges the DK goes down. I use the liberator to take out Karyanna rose, put hermit in the middle of the table to be annoying and make sure only one clock can reach Vulcan and nothing else can get in properly (except on the vanguard).

His Round 2: One clock gets Abuse and goes in on my Vulcan and take out roughly half of it. Another Abused clock gets to my Vanguard and with the help of a gremlin swarm takes it out (the hard rolled 8s came up a bit too often for my taste, was hoping it would take another beast to kill it). My great idea to play the hermit aggressively gets punished hard by a certain frog deciding to eat him. Chris scores his zone and flag while contesting everything of mine. Child is camping 2.

My turn 3. I look at my options, I think I have a pretty good chance for an assassination but usually prefer to go for the attrition, however with Child cranking the damage output so hard and the nature of Grymkin and clocks to punish any mistake really hard, on top of it being the last round of the day I decide that skipping this chance is just stupid. To start the assassination run the liberator tries to free up a trancer from the frog but fails (needed to remove a crabbit from Child) while also getting in arcing range of Child. Syvestro goes and feats and casts a free Stygian that Chris Ruins. I cast a second one for some damage and boost hit on a third one hoping for Blind but don’t get it but roll good damage. The Toro gets in and kills the frog. The trancer slams the crabbit so its knocked down and cant shieldguard. Guided fire goes up, Alyce loads the last focus on Vulcan and Vulcan goes in. After 2 transfers and 4 shots Child goes down with the BE still available to go and I secure the first win for the team. Unfortunately, we once again end up 2-3 against Canada and end the day in a spot we are not too happy with.

Game 4 we get Denmark Brave Tin Soldiers. I end up in a CG mirror with Syvestro vs Gearhart. The scenario is Invasion and I get to start.

2000px-Flag_of_Denmark.svg

Turn 1 I consider staying back a bit to avoid too much damage early but decide its not worth staying back. BE goes on the right with the Liberator while everything else goes on the left. There is a building between the central zone and the right zone cutting the board of pretty heavily and giving me a good place to keep Syvestro safe.

Sören want to put the hurt in early and the Vulcan rockets + a hot shot Railless put a good chunk of damage into my Vulcan. Gearhart also shadowbinds the Vulcan. Overall he stays back pretty far.

Turn 2 I consider an assassination. Gearhart is camping 1 in cover but in range from all Vulcan shots. Unfortunately the liberator is .5” or so out of arcing range. I quick count puts me at 80% assassination but then it is an all in play so I decide to not go for it and trust in my attrition play. I back of a little trusting that he has to enter the zones next turn, put a bit of damage into the left railless with the Vulcan rockets. Repair my Vulcan with 2 mechanics and the objective and put up a shieldguard and Hermit to protect the Vulcan to make sure he will not go down. I use the liberator to blind the right BE and place my Toro ready to charge anything entering the central zone.

In return Sören goes for my Toro. I use the vanguard and Hermit to keep it alive but he manages to get it shadowbound and cripple its cortex meaning its is not going anywhere next turn. One rocketman gunner also manages to snipe out the arcnode of my Liberator making sure my assassination is not a sure thing next turn.

Turn 3 I feat to go for a big attrition swing. Vulcan gets guided fire and chooses rust and walks within 5” of the left BE while shooting the right BE with the rocket. The sprays clear most of the rocketmen giving me a good chunk of healing from the feat meaning the Toro is in good shape for net turn. My BE then goes it and takes his out with rust and feat. Hermit gets slammed forward again clipping the left BE. The transmuted Vanguard went in and took out that BE as well. A trancers goes in and slams one Assault trooper into another, killing one and leaving one knocked down. I do not score any point but this leaves me with almost no losses while Sören only has DB rockets, Vulcan and assault troopers left.

In return Sören gets a bit greedy and feats on my Vanguard thinking he can take it out first and then kill the Vulcan, gearhart shadowbinds the Vanguard and then his Vulcan goes in with rust. With feat, my own Hermit and his rust my arm stat is not looking too helpful. However some unlucky rolls from Sören leaves the Vulcan punching the vanguard too many times and it only gets 2 swings at my Vulcan leaving it at just below half boxes. With only a single assaultrooper getting in and a DB rocket making a brave try my Vulcan is left at just above 10 boxes.

At this point Sören gives me the game since I will overrun him on scenario and attrition with the Vulcan still alive (even without my Vulcan I think he was in a rough spot but at least he could have hoped for my dice to fail).

My teammates also manage to pull through giving us a 5-1 win this round.

Game 5 We get the Malaysian Tigers, really exciting to play one of the new teams at the event!

Malaysia

Pairings end up with me playing against Ben playing Khador. I drop Syvestro (surprise!) and he drops Sorscha1 in WoW. The scenario is Anarchy which generally is the hardest scenario for me. We play on a table that is fairly open in the middle with a few trenches and a building in each zone.

I get to start again, however ADd doomreavers with apparition keeps me a little honest at least. I go with the DB rocket towards my left zone. BE towards the right flag and Vulcan towards the left one. Vanguard with transmute parks far up in a trench but the rest respects the doomreaver threat.

Ben puts a couple charges into my vanguard but def 17 proves too much, he jams in his outriders on my right, set up Fenris in a trench and have Victor set fire to a trancer. The trancers dies from fire and takes a mechanic with him in the explosion.

Round 2. I shoot down most of the offensive unit of reavers with my Vulcan and also manage to kill off Fenris (Guided fire> trenches 😉 ). Toro+BE+Trancers clear the outriders. DB rocket clears a couple of doomreavers in the left zone.

In Return Ben takes down my Liberator and kill a few trancers and a DB rocket crew, he also scores the left zone and put up the Koldun Lords to annoy my shooting. Victor is kept honest by the Toro and Vulcan melee threats. 0-1

Round 3. I continue taking down doomreavers as much as I can. I manage to clear my flag but unfortunately I have to use the mechanic that was supposed to contest to score it. I start chipping away at Victor slowly with the Vulcan while clearing doomreavers with the sprays. 1-2

Ben plays Sorscha offensively and takes down the Vanguard after icecages make him stationary. Unfortunatley for him he doesn’t keep a full unit in the left zone meaning clearing his flag only gives him 1p for 1-3.

Round 4 I put some pressure on Victor and manage to clear both flags and Syvestro gets over to the left to score putting me up at 4-3.

Ben running low on clock cant find an assassination out so just goes for some AP collection before we call it a game.

Team once again 5-0 and we are digging ourselves out of the losers bracket a bit.

Game 6 and we end up into Spain Rougue.

Flag_of_Spain_(Civil).svg

This is a team that brought Wurmwood in Bones (paired with Tharn) and Ossya and also gets to choose tables… My turn to take the bus and/or hope for the best. I end up playing into Manel and his Circle. Scenario is Recon2. I ask my Circle teammate what he thinks my opponents would do and since everyone knows wormwood is great into CG we assume WurmWood and I drop Locke to try to stand a chance (Stranglehold on Vulcan and potentially the BE is bad times) and my opponent drops Baldur1…. My hopes of managing to go 6-0 personally instantly shrinks away.

Manel gets to start and he pushes up offensively.

I decide there is not point in playing safe, to dig out of this I have to go offensive and hope for dice and/or mistakes from my opponent to somehow get a miracle. I shift towards my left pretty heavily to try and push his flag (and not get locked away from it if he feats) giving deathwolves and B+C a good charge as a bait.

Round 2: Manel doesn’t take my bait and puts up a forests and back off hoping for a better alpha next turn. One ravager on my right goes up to contest the flag and be a vengeance bait.

I decide to take his bait for the RtW trigger. I get pathfinder on my Toros to get into the forest. Liberator kills the baith Tharn for a RtW move. My fully loaded Toror then goes in to a ravager on the left+Caul, and after a couple of misses and a couple of toughs my thoughts on Tough+Steady once again gets reinforced as I don’t get any furtger RtW trigger. My plan to push up agressivley and try to take out Caul and a some ravagers ended up in giving vengeance to both Units… At least my trancer gets on my flag for 1-0

Round 3: Manel takes out the Liberator and a Toro and puts up his feat, scoring 2 on the right zone and flag. 1-2

I try to get some work done, go for clearing the right zone but my suppressor doesn’t agree with it and fails killing the ravager contesting there. At least I take out Caul and most of the left Tharn unit. A brave mechanic manages to contest both zone and flag. Still 1-2.

Round 4: Storm bird gets Primal and wacks a Toro and most of a vanguard. Right ravagers take down my vanguard. Baldur goes away to hide on my right. 1-4

At this point I struggle to even contest the right zone and Im quickly running out of pieces in general. I try to find some assassination angle but as my remaining mechanic is too far from my remaining Toro that is stuck in a forest I cant find a way to get my Toro to Baldur and I concede the game. Unfortunatley my brave dive under the bus is not enough for my team to get the upper hand and we end up with yet another 2-3 loss. My (potentially biased by my loss 😉 ) prediction is that we will see Spain as a challanger for the higher spots next year!

So I end up 5-1 (5-0 Syvestro and 0-1 Locke) and the team goes 3-3. Not what we were hoping for but a good SoS and games won puts us in a not too shabby 24th place. As always a great event both for games and socializing. A big thanks to my teammates and my opponents!

Let me know if you have any questions or need some clarifications.

Im currently working on getting some CG stats from WTC setup and might continue on to full stats for the other factions so keep your eyes on this blog!
